Barbados Blackbelly Hair Sheep

Barbados Blackbelly Hair Sheep – In the United States and Canada, the animals are referred to as “Barbados.” On their island of origin, that names seems to be unknown; and the breed is referred to at the ‘Blackbelly’. There is little doubt the Barbados Blackbelly has African ancestry, and much evidence the breed originated and evolved on the Island of Barbados. A small flock was imported by the USDA in 1904 to Bethesda, Maryland. Horned rams, which are prized so highly in the U.S. were probably created in the US since the rams of the Caribbean are polled with occasional scurs or horns. In spite of their appearance Blackbelly carcasses are well-muscled and have negligible carcass fat. The Blackbelly ewe breed throughout the year producing single and twin births. The lambs do not grow as readily as most commercial breeds though do not need the high volume protein diet to finish other breeds. The Blackbelly is a HAIR sheep and not the result of a cross between a goat and sheep cross.
