Toro Rojo

The Red Poll Breed was originally thought to be introduced into England by the Romans, and was developed in England as a dual-purpose breed and known for its production of milk and fine quality meat.

Since the sequencing of the bovine genome, five breeds have been identified carrying the ‘tenderness’ gene or allele (gene) naturally in those breeds. Two of those breeds having the tenderness allele occurring naturally are the Red Poll and the Piedmontese breeds. The need for aging, ‘shocking/stimulating’ the carcass or any other method to enhance the tenderness in the carcass becomes a mute point.

The Red Poll breed is naturally polled (without horns) with a constant deep red coloring. Known for their calving ease producing light weight but vigorous calves, they grow out well due to the tremendous milking ability of their dams. Leading other breeds in feed conversion has been borne out by well know universities. The Red Poll is also know for its docility which is an important trait for the management of animals in all aspects of handling.

We have chosen to introduce the qualities and characteristic are the qualities in the cattle produced at Reflections Ranch. We use the Red Poll on our first calf heifers to enhance a profitable calf for meat and replacement heifer. We gain by using two breeds that contain the tenderness allele naturally. In summation we have an easy calving, consistent red polled, docile, good gaining tenderness product. For us that is like ‘winning the lotto’ in the beef industry.
